Customer choice: Self-service checkout? Yes! But more efficient and faster to use

September 23, 2020

Did you know that retail is recording the biggest investment in AI? This year alone, expenses for the development of artificial intelligence will amount to almost 36 billion USD. Interestingly, it is the retailers who are at the forefront of this investment – they plan to spend nearly 6 billion USD on the development of technologies based on artificial intelligence.

Reality versus technology

Today, no one is surprised by self-service devices in urban spaces, shopping centers and service outlets. Self-service checkouts or order kiosks in restaurants are already an usual landscape of our everyday life. But as it turns out, quoting Business Wire*: “While nearly two-thirds of consumers frequently use vending machines at the grocery store, nearly 75% said the biggest problem with the technology was the difficulty of using it to checkout products”. Frequent mistakes and the problems with the handling of the device led to the outcome: “90% of consumers want self-service kiosks that can automatically identify products”.

Less means more

User experience experts around the world are wondering how to improve the experience from using the self-service checkouts. How to optimize systems, interfaces and websites to make them more efficient, but still user friendly. In short, how to make the technology that surrounds us to meet our expectations – on the linguistic, cognitive and emotional level.

And we, as it turns out, are an impatient species. We know that time is the only currency that cannot be bought. Therefore, nearly 25% of surveyed consumers stated that a faster payment path at self-checkout counters would significantly improve their experience of using it. What if this time could be reduced by as much as 45%?

Meet SelfBox with AI

Do you remember our SelfBox self-service checkout? In 2019, we received a prestigious award at the Retail Show as the best product in the “Trade Innovations” category. We wrote about it >HERE<. Since then, we have been working intensively on the development of our proprietary technology of object recognition. Then we integrated this soft with the best version of our SelfBox and voilà! – the first SelfBox with AI model was created, and it made its debut in the largest Polish restaurant chain. You can read about that > HERE <.
